The Rialto Fish Market is in danger !
There is a plan to move the wholesale fish market from its historical location at Rialto to Fusina at Tronchetto. The market would be moved by about 5 kilometers away from the central part of Venice to the area of Tronchetto, beyond Piazzale Roma, where the bus terminal and parkings are located.
The Port Authority, owner of the estate where the wholesale market is located, is bringing forward the project. But the association of fisheries has requested a meeting with the mayor to block the initiative, and it is gaining the support of the general public strongly opposing this change.
The fish market of Rialto, with its central location, is one of the liveliest and most characteristic spots in Venice. It is the second larget wholesale fish market in Italy after the one in Rome, and large quantities and varieties of fresh fish are sold every day.
