Barberini Museum in Rome

A new beautiful museum opens in Rome. After more than 60 years, the Galleria Nazionale dell'Arte Antica (National Gallery of Ancient Art) at Barberini Palace opened on 17 September.

The spectacular Barberini Palace where the gallery is located, is a Baroque masterpiece built betwen 1625-1633 for the Barberini Pope Urban VIII and designed by Bernini, Borromini and Maderno.

The Gallery opened after a long restoration costed € 26 million and is now hosting a collection of more than 300 pieces including La Fornarina by Rapahael, Judith Beheading Holofernes by Caravaggio, the Sacra Famiglia by Andrea Del Sarto, Henry VIII by Hans Holbein and many others.

Unfortunately (as you can see from one of the photos) not everything went smoothly at the opening day, when a queue of 30,000 people formed on Via Fontanella Borghese and the traffic in the area around Palazzo Barberini (including Piazza Barberini and Via Quattro Fontane) was in total chaos. But after things go back to normality (that is not much different from chaos anyway) it will surely be a wonderful place to enjoy even more art in Rome.
