Lyrics in the bath

It was 1st August 1937 when the magnificent Terme di Caracalla started hosting the summer season from the Opera Theatre of Rome. The debut was Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor.

Some of the greatest artists of all times, from Mario Del Monaco to Luciano Pavarotti, performed on the stage with the backdrop of the Roman ruins.

The bath complex of Caracalla was built between 212 – 216 AD, and named after the emperor in power at the time.  They were in use until 537 when the aqueducts bringing water to the baths where destroyed by the invasion of the Goths.

If you are in Rome during summertime don’t miss the chance to experience a lyric opera in one of the most romantic and fascinating settings. This year program started last night with Puccini’s Tosca and will continue with Carmen and Midsummer Night’s Dream. Shows starting at 21.00
