Ancient Roman Paintings

Roma, la pittura di un Impero. It started yesterday 24 September a fascinating exhibition on ancient Roman Painting at the Scuderie del Quirinale.

The exhibition is divided in different thematic sections. In the first one is possible to see whole paintings that recreate the decorative context of a Roman house. It will show entire frescoed walls originally from the Villa Farnesina in Rome and from the Villa Boscotrecase in Pompeii. The effect is stunning, and the viewer can feel like being a guest in an ancient Roman home.

The other sections are organized by specific themes: landscape, mythology, still life, portrait. They give a broad perspective on all the styles and subjects of ancient Roman paintings, dating from the second century B.C. to the fourth century A.D.

More than one hundred pieces of art will be on display, coming from the most important Italian and European collections: Louvre, British Museum, Puskin Museum, Vatican Museums, Capitoline Museums and many others. The exhibition will remain open until 17 January.
