A tornado hit Venice yesterday causing some damages though there are no reports of people injured. During a violent storm the typical tornado shape appeared in the sky of Venice above the island of Sant' Elena located on the Eastern side of the city.
The areas of Sant'Elena, Sant'Erasmo and Certosa have been affected. A group of kids remained for some time trapped in a container where they took shelter. They were soon freed by the fire brigade.
The event is surely unusual in Venice but it did happen in the past. As you can see in this photo, a memorial stone commemorates the victims of a tornado that took place more than 40 years ago. On September 11 1970 a tornado sank a boat killing 21 people.
