Colosseum Underground

The underground levels of the Colosseum (Coliseum), together with the upper third ring, have been opened again to visitors in 2011. A visit inside the iconic monument of Rome is a real must for every traveller to the Eternal City.

The visit to these areas is amazing. In the lower levels is possible to see the place where the animals waited in cages before entering the arena. During the excavations numerous remainings of animals' bones and skulls were found. It is easy to imagine how the life was in this backstage area: dark, lit by burning torches, odours of animals and sweating bodies, slaves shouting and gladiators preparing for the fight.

Another spectacular area that now can be visited is the upper third ring. Again the guide must open the gates that seclude this area. After climbing steps that are 2.000 year old the view is breathtaking: on the inside there is the amphiteater in all its splendour. On the outside fantastic views on the Forum, arch of Constantine, Via dei Fori Imperiali and all the area around the Colosseum.
