Venice Redentore Celebrations

Festa del Redentore is one of the most popular celebrations in Venice. It takes place every year on the third Saturday of July to remember the end of the great plague of 1577. The same year the church of Redentore, the Redeemer, was built by the Venetians on the island of Giudecca as expression of their faith and gratitude.

As part of the celebrations, every year a gigantic pontoon 330 meter long is built on the Giudecca canal so the population can walk to the Redentore church. The bridge stays for just one day and then is dismantled until the following year.

The celebrations include also a religious procession led by the Patriarch of Venice, but the most spectacular moment is when at dusk hundreds of boats convene in the lagoon in front of Saint Mark's waiting for the fireworks show that starts at 11.30 pm. The magic of the architecture of Venice with the backdrop of the fireworks is truly unforgettable.
